Winter solstice greetings!
The Winter Solstice brings a sense of hope as we look forward to longer days and the warmth of the sun returning with the promise of brighter days ahead. But for now we remain hunkered down in the warmth of our homes.
I recently spent a cosy evening curled up by the fire watching one of my favourite childhood films; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and what struck me was how coming to yoga for the first time can be compared to Lucy stepping into the wardrobe and discovering Narnia. Here are seven reasons why.
Yoga and Narnia both offer the opportunity for a new beginning…
Just as Lucy’s journey into Narnia marks the beginning of an extraordinary adventure, stepping onto the yoga mat for the first time opens the door to a new and transformative experience, inviting us to explore uncharted territory within ourselves.
Yoga and Narnia both provide a sense of wonder…
Narnia is filled with magical landscapes, creatures, and experiences that awaken a sense of wonder. Similarly, yoga introduces us to a world of ancient philosophy, physical movement, breath awareness, and mindfulness – all sparking curiosity and excitement about what we might discover about our body, mind and spirit.
Narnia and yoga offer opportunities for transformation...
In Narnia, Lucy and her friends undergo personal growth and transformation. Yoga, too, offers a path for personal development, allowing us to cultivate strength, flexibility and emotional resilience, while uncovering deeper layers of self-awareness and understanding.
Narnia and yoga allow us to escape the ordinary…
Just as stepping into the wardrobe allows Lucy to escape from the mundane world, stepping onto our yoga mat provides a refuge from the stresses of everyday life, creating a space for us to disconnect from external pressures and reconnect with ourselves.
Yoga, like Narnia connects us to a larger community…
Narnia introduces Lucy to a community of characters, each with their own stories and wisdom. Yoga classes can also provide a supportive community, through sharing experiences and journeys with others on similar paths of growth and healing.
Both evoke a journey of discovery…
Whether it’s exploring the magical elements of Narnia or the inner workings of our bodies and minds through yoga, each offers new insights, challenges and joys.
Narnia and yoga invite us to embrace the unknown…
Entering Narnia takes courage and a willingness to go where we’ve never been before. Similarly, trying a yoga class for the first time can be daunting, but it encourages us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace the possibilities of growth and self-exploration.
If this has sparked your interest in starting yoga then I would love for you to join me for a 6-week yoga course starting in January on Friday mornings in Colerne and Thursday evenings in Stanton St Quintin. Courses cost £54 or £12 drop-in. All levels are welcome.
